Terms of Service

The ground rules for using Black & Gold Society, in plain language and with the same legal weight.

Last updated October 8, 2026

Acceptance of these terms

These terms apply to anyone who uses Black & Gold Society (the "Service"), whether you're reading the public club pages or using a member account. By creating an account or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms of Service and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

Who this is for

The Service has a public club website (the home page, Games, Teams, News, Give and FAQ pages) that anyone can read, and a private network for Slug Rugby alumni, current players, coaches and their supporters.

Membership of the network isn't automatic. Every application is reviewed by an admin, and we can decline it, or later revoke membership, for anyone we reasonably believe doesn't belong here or has broken these terms. You must be at least 13 to create an account.

Your account

You're responsible for the accuracy of your profile and for keeping your login secure. Specifically:

  • One account per person: no shared logins, and no accounts created on someone else's behalf.
  • Tell an admin promptly if you think someone has used your account without your permission.
  • You're responsible for what happens under your account.

Having an account means the Service will send you notifications and email about activity that involves you, plus announcements from club admins. You can control most of these in Notification preferences; the Privacy Policy lists them.

Acceptable use

This is a small, trust-based community. Using it, you agree not to:

  • Harass, impersonate, or misrepresent your identity to another member.
  • Scrape, bulk-download, or otherwise export the directory or member data beyond normal browsing.
  • Use messages, comments, listings or the club's Slack channel to spam, solicit unrelated business, or send unwanted marketing.
  • Post content that's unlawful, deceptive, or infringes someone else's rights.
  • Share another member's private information (contact details, resume, messages) outside the Service without their consent.

If someone breaks these rules, tell an admin through Messages.

Your content

You keep ownership of what you post: your profile, photos, posts, comments, listings, messages and any resume you upload. By posting it, you give us the license we need to store it and show it to the people it's meant for (for example, showing your profile to other members, or delivering a message to its recipient, including by email). We don't use your content for anything beyond running the Service.

Anything you post to the club's Slack channel from the Slack page is sent to that Slack workspace with your name, stored there, and visible to everyone in the channel, who may not be members of this site. Slack's own terms apply to it there.

Your profile photo and images attached to feed posts are stored at web addresses that don't need a sign-in, so anyone with one of those links can open the image. Don't upload anything there you wouldn't want seen outside the network.

Directory, mentorship & opportunities

We help members find and connect with each other; we don't vet what comes of those connections. Mentors volunteer their own time and advice, and a mentorship isn't a promise of a job, an internship, or any particular outcome. Opportunities are posted by members and are their own listings, not ours. An opportunity's "Apply" button takes you to an outside link the poster supplied; we don't receive, forward or track applications, so check the details directly with the poster before acting on anything.

The public club pages

Rosters, fixtures, results, news and the Give page are maintained by club admins. We try to keep them accurate, but kickoff times, venues and line-ups change, so treat them as a guide and check closer to the day. If you're listed on a roster or appear on a public page and want something corrected or removed, contact an admin (see the Privacy Policy).

Donations

The Give page links to UC Santa Cruz's own giving site, which processes every donation. We never handle your money or payment details, and receipts, refunds and the use of donated funds are handled under UC Santa Cruz's terms, not ours. Campaign totals, goals and donor counts on the Give page are updated by admins from time to time; they aren't live figures.

Other services and links

The Service connects to services run by others, including Slack, YouTube (club videos and live streams), UC Santa Cruz's giving site, Google sign-in, and the outside links members add to profiles and listings. Those services have their own terms and privacy policies, and we aren't responsible for their content or what they do with your information.

Moderation & termination

Admins may edit or remove content that breaks these terms or misrepresents its owner, including posts, listings, comments, Slack channel messages, profile details and profile photos. They may also suspend or ban an account, with or without notice depending on how serious the problem is. A banned account loses access to the members-only network, but its information isn't automatically deleted.

You can stop using the Service at any time. To have your account and data deleted, ask an admin; the Privacy Policy explains what deletion removes and what can remain.

No warranty

The Service is provided "as is." We do our best to keep it available and accurate, but we don't promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose. Use your own judgment, especially around opportunities, mentorship advice, and anything financial or career-related shared by other members.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Black & Gold Society and the people who run it aren't liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including anything arising from another member's conduct or content, a connection made through the Service, or a service run by someone else.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the Service changes. When we do, we update the "last updated" date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we also tell members with an announcement. Continuing to use the Service after an update means you accept the revised terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, as a reasonable default given that the club it serves is based in California.
